Pregnant & Parenting Teen Program

Teen Pregnancy Program - ArkansasArkansas Communities for Young Parents Program

The Statewide Technical Assistant Resource (S.T.A.R) team is collaborating with The Arkansas Children’s Trust Fund (AR CTF) to develop and implement, “Arkansas Communities for Young Parents”, a statewide program to assist pregnant and parenting teenagers in Arkansas.  The S.T.A.R. team consists of experienced staff from Healthy Connections, Inc. in Mena and Centers for Youth and Families in Little Rock. They have been providing technical assistance and training to new and existing AR CTF programs for the past four years.  Currently AR CTF/S.T.A.R. is providing technical assistance to ten program organizations that provide long-term, intensive home visiting services to teen parents who are pregnant or parenting.

Many of the 75 counties in Arkansas have few or no services for pregnant or parenting teens.  Under “Arkansas Communities for Young Parents”, AR CTF will offer grant funds to at least 10 more communities in the state of Arkansas for the development of either a home visiting program or a center or school-based support-group for pregnant and parenting teens.  These ten sites will provide services to more than 700 teen parents and their babies each year.   S.T.A.R., funded under AR CTF will provide the much needed assistance to get these new programs started.  Staff from the S.T.A.R. team will use their experience to train the new programs on how to deliver effective services to teens and will offer ongoing  quarterly training opportunities throughout the duration of the project.  S.T.A.R. provides assistance with grant proposal preparation; assistance with filing for non-profit status; training of staff; training of program leadership; financial accountability training; report writing training; team building exercises; network enhancement; curricula suggestions and training; identification of community resources; and access to statewide child maltreatment prevention resources and more.

The overall goal of this project is to empower pregnant/parenting teens in Arkansas to provide a healthy, nurturing environment for their children, as well as develop personal, educational and vocational skills for a more productive life.  S.T.A.R. will provide the needed technical assistance to programs funded under AR CTF. By providing these services the programs will support pregnant/parenting teens and work to increase delivery of healthy babies, educational outcomes, compliance with immunization schedules, social supports, parenting skills, the ability to create a safe home environment and reduce subsequent pregnancies.
